Gettysburg 1963: Civil Rights & Black History in an Iconic American Town?
Like Concord, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania has a rich African American history that is often overshadowed by other aspects of the community’s history. This talk will put the town’s Black history front and center, highlighting the efforts of a small but determined population committed to fighting for a true “new birth of freedom,” in Lincoln’s words. Particular attention will be paid to the various ways in which Black Gettysburgians used the events for which their town was best known to further their campaign for freedom, particularly as civil rights campaigns, the Cold War, and commemoration of the centennial anniversary of the Civil War converged in the 1950s and 60s.
