In the decades leading to the Civil War, Concord’s most committed antislavery zealot was not one of the town’s famous authors but a person you’ve probably never heard of. Yet from the early 1830s until her death in 1868, Mary Merrick Brooks was at the center of the radical abolitionist effort in Concord.
