"Freedom’s Silhouette" honors the enduring fight

"Freedom’s Silhouette" honors the enduring fight for freedom, drawing inspiration from the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and the lives of 19th-century Concord residents Henry David Thoreau and Ellen Garrison. The installation features two 6-foot-long benches with acrylic silhouettes of Thoreau and Garrison. The transparent acrylic allows viewers to see their own reflection alongside these historical figures, fostering a deep connection to Concord’s heritage and broader themes of justice and freedom.

We took a trip into Boston to visit the Museum of African American History yesterday. For all of the Ellen Garrison nerds out there (you know who you are), this spot is very special to her history. It is the site of the Joy Street Baptist Church.

Ellen lived for more than 20 years in Boston and became involved in the antislavery movement while residing on the North Slope of Beacon Hill. In 1857, in a ceremony performed by the Rev. John T. Raymond, a former pastor of the African
Baptist (Joy Street) Church, Ellen married John W. Jackson, a free black farmer from Delaware. They were married in the sancturary of the Joy Street Church. Both were 34. Her husband died within a few years, however, and by 1863, Ellen Garrison Jackson had moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where she had charge of a small private school. #interns #historyroadtrip
