The Robbins House, the center for Concord’s African-American history, recently hosted a community reading of Frederick Douglass’ speech “The Meaning of the July Fourth for the Negro.” 


The event was sponsored by Massachusetts Humanities, a non-profit with the goal of “Improving Civic Life: Their grants inspire considered thought, conversation, and action through the humanities disciplines.” The event was facilitated by Guy Peartree, dressed as Douglass, leading the audience of over 50 people in a participatory reading of Douglass’s speech through to its dramatic conclusion, with all voices raised in unison for the last three paragraphs.
